The God ordained responsibilities of a Husband are established by God for his will and purpose in this world as a visible reflection of God himself. Though the Husband is a sinner, when striving to fulfill his ordained role, his home sees the Lord and his Grace despite his humanity. His responsibilities can be broken down as leader, unconditional and sacrificial lover, servant, and foundational support system for his wife and family.
Lead The Home
1 Cor 11:3; Eph 5:22-30; Gal 3:28
All the responsibility of leading the wife and family in this life falls on the Husband. Just as Christ is head of the Church and God the Father is the head of Christ; the Husband is head of his wife and home. When the Husband is seeking the Lord and God’s will, his leading is exactly how God wants it to be. When the Husband seeks his own desires and selfish means, the leading goes astray and the family suffers. The Husband is absolutely accountable to God and God WILL hold him accountable.
The Husband is NOT greater than the Wife. This is a cultural misconception. Even though the family structure has different ordained responsibilities, they are all equal in value and purpose.
Love Unconditionally and Sacrificially
Eph 5:22-30; 1 John 3:18
The love that Husbands are called to exhibit is the greatest form of love from the greatest example; Jesus Christ. The Husband is called to love sacrificially. He must be willing to give up everything, even himself, in every way, for God’s Glory for his wife. This love is not conditional or dependent on his Wife or family. Just as Jesus gave up his life for those whom he loves even while they were still in sin; the Husband is called to do the same for his Wife. This greatest form of love is a verb, action, way of life; and not just in word.
Servant of his Wife
John 13:1-17, Phil 2:7, 1 Tim 5:8
The Husband leads and loves by example. He serves his Wife just as Jesus came as a humble servant and took care of the disciples. He does himself what ever is necessary for the good of his Wife. Even though he knows he has the authoritative role, he exercises it for his Wife’s benefit and not his own. Part of serving his Wife is providing for her. Providing for her needs; physically and spiritually.
Dedicate to his Wife
Eph 5:31, Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5; Mark 10:8; 1 Corinthians 6:16b
The Husband and Wife form their own family unit apart from being under their parents previously. Now that the Husband has a Wife, he is called to be absolutely dedicated to her and her well being physically and spiritually. That requires her to be more important than his career, hobbies, friends, and anything else that can take away from his focus on her. She must be his priority in life.
Supports and encourage his wife
Proverbs 31:28, Colossians 3:19, 1 Peter 3:7
As he leads his wife, serves her and remains dedicated to her; she will grow in the Lord and be equipped to fulfill her responsibility as a wife more effectively. As she fulfills her responsibility in the Lord, the Husband must support and encourage her. Even when his wife, in her humanity just as the husband is, makes mistakes; the husband must be kind and gracious. He must continue to leader her in love and in truth.
1 Tim 3:2, Titus 1:5-6, Gen. 2:19-20-22
There is only One Husband in the family structure that is given the role. He is called to only have One wife. In God’s original design we see only 1 man was created and there was only 1 suitable equal helper in the family structure, the woman. This defined rule was established before there were any governments or laws of man. Anything different was not in God’s original design and came after sin entered into the world. Romantic intimate relationships outside of this is sexual immorality because it is outside of this explicit ordained covenant role established by God.
